Howland Wood (1877-1938) was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and graduated from Brown University in 1900. He became a member of the ANS in 1909. By 1913 he had been appointed Curator, remaining in this position until his death in 1938. At that time, the Society only maintained a single curator, with two assistants. A noted Islamic numismatist, Miles was responsible for the Society's Islamic and Hispanic collections from 1946 until his retirement in 1972; he also served as Chief Curator from 1954 through 1969.
